pigment red #5 + pigment red #112 = Golden's Cad Red Med. Hue

Years ago I petitioned all my friends to give me their used bus transfers.

I used them to create swatches that would show me colour variations from brand to brand in the paint I was using. I also found that the swatches were a good way to record the transparency and sheen of each colour.

All you need to do is gesso over the blue text and you are ready to start painting swatches and label them with pigment contents. Which is great for when you want to recreate a colour that you have mixed yourself out of a variety of other colours.

Vancouver's bus passes have the most perfect thick black bar running down the side which is great for showing how transparent or opaque a colour can be. Below are a few swatches from my collection:

VIVO + grunt gallery project

This is what I worked on last night.

It is a large drawing/painting on a big sheet of paper for the grunt gallery/VIVO Exquisite Corpse window project.

This will be on display March 26 -April 8th 2011 in the VIVO windows on Main Street with two other artists connecting drawings on either side.

I'm excited to see what the other artists make on either side of my piece!

Working away on concept drawings I discovered, to my delight, a bizarre characteristic of my light table. I love stripes. These ones kind of hurt to look at and coincidentally I just watched Cronenberg's Scanner's recently so my mind went there.

I'm still working away at a new series but in the meantime I made this unrelated painting. It's not a bad idea to make something minimal when you are working on something a bit more complex. It's satisfying to finish something and feel that it is absolutely complete.

Art and Sole 2010 is just around the corner. For those unfamiliar with the show, each participating artist works with a pair of PF Flier sneakers to create a unique piece of art. Those in Vancouver can view and bid on the artwork on Aug 13th from 7pm to 11pm at Ayden Gallery (88 West Pender).

Art and Sole is put together by Caleb Beyers and Hanahlie Beise from Caste projects. They work really hard to make this great event as organized as possible. Which is especially important this year as the show will be travelling to Montreal, Calgary, and Toronto.

Above is my submission. It is a single shoe heavily painted in murky green tones with a touch of copper leaf and copper paint.
The text on the shoe reads: Without you I become "Dysfunctional".

My Art On Your Bodies!

Deborah, a very good friend of mine and talented tattoo artist, just paid me the huge compliment of tattooing my art onto her arm. Eeeep! I don't have any tattoos. Mostly because I could never decide on an image that I want on my skin permanently. As in forever! It was a huge surprise for me to see this via text message.

Below is a detail from my painting used for the tattoo. This piece is called "In the Gloaming". At the time that I painted this I had just discovered these brushes that look almost like a fork. They have awesome separation so they make a multi-mark. This was how I achieved the grass effect and the swirly atmosphere of the background.

Please check out this 8 minute film called "Process" (link is above) by Alison Lilly.
In this video you will see me working on the earlier stages of the large painting above. It is from my current body of work (a new series) titled "Like A Great Black Fire".

After selecting a handful of artists from Vancouver, Alison set out to film each artist as they worked in their studios. Being an artist herself Alison captures key moments in "Process" that really speak to the mysterious nature of the creative process

Amongst my favourite moments, there are two stand out moments that I thought really captured the characteristics of being in the creative moment. The first is Brandy Masch squinting through her luminous magnifier which she has to carefully adjust in order to obtain the finest detail. The second moment is watching Jessica Bell as she turns her abstract pieces in many directions and then becomes thoughtful and still while she ponders the possibilities.

"Process" is inspiring and fun and accompanied by a great selection of tunes.

The painting above is for a group show I am participating in called Beyond Wonderland @ Box Studios. The name is taken from an old black-and-white horror film called Eyes Without A Face. One of Alice's adventures takes place when she ventures through a looking glass she finds in one of the rooms in her Aunt's house.

Silence

Last year I began the above painting, Silence, which was only completed about a month ago.

For a long time I considered what form (s) should emerge in this quiet setting. Eventually I realized that the room was already full of silence and also full of the potential for anything.

With painting, it can be difficult to know when to let something stay simple or when to push it further. Once a piece is over-worked it's hard to recapture the magic that was there before.

Tattoo my art + win my heart

I guess it is one of the best compliments you can get as an artist ----when someone tattoos your drawing on their arm!

I did this little sketch for some friends of mine who live in Victoria. Many months later one of them emailed me to ask if it would be ok if my drawing was used for a tattoo for one of their friends Jody. Jody you are the best! You win my heart!

Octopi represent a feeling of dexterity and multi-tasking which I hold pretty high in my life. They are very symbolic for me.

I'm really excited to be a part of something special like this by giving my time and artistic skill to help raise money and give back to the environment.

I contacted David Suzuki Foundation to find out more about their connection to Artists for Earth and the following responses were courtesy of Lorraine Tanner on behalf of David Suzuki Foundation.

How were you approached by Brian Hardie in regards to setting up donation to David Suzuki Foundation from the art sales at the event?

Brain Hardie contacted the David Suzuki Foundation by phone with his idea to have an art gala to raise funds to support critical environmental causes or programs administered by our Foundation. We have had many conversations since.

Have other visual arts related events supported David Suzuki Foundation in the past and can you mention a few of those events?

We have not had any other visual arts related fundraisers hold gala “art sales” events for us in the past so we are very excited about this wonderful effort by Brian, his team and all the participating artists and guests attending this evening. We hope it will be very successful and continue year over year. It is always the most work for the first 3 years.

How would you describe the impact this type of event will have on our community?

Impact? It will depend on how the evening turns out to know the impact. With all community events, they are very important in both the environmental message that is put out in the community and the conversations that it stimulates for all attending and hearing about the event. There is a real ripple effect that can make an enormous difference as people share problems and idea. What more creative a group than artists! We are very grateful for all the efforts of this group and the arts in general for this caring and meaningful event.

My previous contribution was the Fall 2009 issue where I had the opportunity to make an image for their cover. This time I participated by creating an image for their centrefold. El Día de los Muertos

The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos or All Souls' Day) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico . The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on November 1st and 2nd in connection with the Catholic holiday of All Saints' Day which occurs on November 1st and All Souls' Day which occurs on November 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.

Shoe Show with El Kartel & PF Fliers

Last week I was invited to do a shoe art show and given a pair of plain black shoes to interpret in some creative way. The shoes I created are shown above in detail and below (larger photos) . They are made with a vintage book cloth of an old murder-mystery novel called "The Morning After Death". These are shoes for solving mysterious murder cases. Simply place them on your feet and suspicion will begin to ascend from the soles of your feet and finally settle in the grey matter of your brain.

October 3rd 2009 will see a tonne of artists from Vancouver and elsewhere showcasing their artistically modified version of the all black PF Flier @ El Kartel on Robson Street in downtown Vancouver. These artists include Graeme Berglund, Danny Vermette, Lindsay Weins, Brian White, Caleb Beyers, Shaun Inouye and many MANY more!

I believe the shoes are all for sale at $150 ($100 to the artist and $50 donated to Arts Umbrella on Granville Island, Vancouver BC). Mine are wearable to a certain extent---I can't say they'd hold together in the rain and with much wear and tear. Really they are more of an art piece...

Arts Umbrella is a great organization to support. "Arts Umbrella provides the highest quality visual and performing arts education to Metro Vancouver children and youth ages 2-19, regardless of their financial circumstances." As well they have a progressive outreach program that brings art education to children growing up in extremely difficult circumstances in Vancouver. Collaboration with Les Mysteres du Son

I first met Pascal and Noriko when they purchased a painting from me entitled "In the Gloaming". They came to my studio to meet me and view the painting which they would later take home with them.

Pascal mentioned to me that he and Noriko made music together. I insisted on hearing it and a few days later a small yellow envelope arrived in the mail containing a copy of their beautifully packaged album by Les Mysteres du Son.

Les Mysteres du Son (in english: the mysteries of sound) is a music duo made up by Pascal Provost and Noriko Provot. They are a couple who work with field recordings and their own, often improvisational, spoken word which fluctuates between Pascal's warm and deep French poetry to Noriko's clear and musical Japanese voice that tells tales of self-reflection and describes adventures in the snow .

"All the tracks were recorded over 4 months last winter, it took me 4 months to put it together. We work on music only in the winter.
We did a limited edition for our friends, it's a total non commercial project, our friends received an album with art and photos, they were all different." -Pascal

I was really struck by the range of their musical style and creativity. They agreed to come and perform at my studio during The Drift ( an annual art walk that takes place Saturday Oct 3 and Sunday Oct 4 2009).

We have arranged a few more sessions before the Drift so that we can work collaboratively on the music they will perform. It will be based upon some of the images of my paintings and perhaps a song about their vintage Italian scooter named "Alice".

I love books, don't get me wrong, its just that lately I won't hesitate to tear their beautiful old covers off in order to create new painting substrates. I know, it's a crime and a shame.

So here I am in this photo with more painting supplies. I go into thrift stores and head straight for the books, emerging with a face like it's Christmas morning. One man's rejected and useless trash is my well-worn treasure.

I am about to further my series of paintings called Catholic School Girls Rule. The original works for this series were shown at the Little Mountain Gallery (in Vancouver) this spring (2009). This series consisted of mostly paintings on old book covers.

Watch out for the new selection this fall in time for exhibition at my studio this Oct 3rd and 4th, 2009. The studio is located at 2414 Main Street (just off Broadway). You are invited.

Collaboration with Todd M. Duym

Here is a painting I made in the early winter of 2008. It was for a series of painting in a two-artist show called The Nightside of Fables. I had actually been slowly working on it through the previous cold and wet 6 months. I was given some photos by a photographer named Todd M. Duym the previous summer (2007) and in the spirit of collaboration he encouraged me to work with them.

10 artists have created their interpretations celebrating life on a life-size coffin lid made from BC denim pine as the canvas for their inspiration (www.LifeLidGala.com). The LifeLid Gala is the showing, fundraising auction and party celebrating this art. Proceeds benefit BC Children’s Hospital.

Ten selected artists have been given a life-size coffin lid (6’ by 4’) to create a unique art piece. Coffin lids were made by Tradeworks Training Society and use BC denim pine; wood recovered from the pine beetle devastation. Artists have generously donated their time and vision in creating these amazing pieces.

"A Kid" blogged me

My friend Rebecca reminds me of tea, house plants, delicious food, good books, and robots. Being both generous and literary, she once lent me a book called "The Elephant Vanishes", a collection of short stories by the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. This book has remained stuck to my mind since then.

What I find captivating about Murakami is his deep exploration of everyday scenarios, with a somewhat contrary injection of unbelievable magical events. Everything I have read of his is so surprising, unexpected, and thoroughly rich. It often requires more than one read through to fully absorb.

I associate Rebecca with Murakami not just because she introduced me to his writing (and also not just because her cat's second name is Watanabe-- read it and you'll see what I mean), but because she is a painter who's work has a similar ability to haunt your psyche. Her paintings are phantasmagorical stories rooted in real life, so mesmerizing and so Murakami-esque.

Show Opening: Catholic School Girls Rule

Growing up in the Catholic school systems of England and Canada has provided rich fodder for this series of Paintings: “Catholic School Girls Rule”. Most of these works consist of acrylic painting on old weathered bookcloth. These works attempt to evoke a sense of the collective consciousness. A group mentality gained by donning a uniform and assembling with others of one’s age and stature. Conversley, some of these paintings emit the moments of heightened, self-aware solitude and independent agency.
